How to give a 5 minute speech in English. This lesson will help you speak English more confidently in front of people. Are you ready to learn how? Well then, let’s jump right in.

Giving a speech is not easy. Especially when it is in English. But, there are 4 easy steps that can help you give an amazing speech in English.

Let’s begin…

[LESSON BEGINS]

Step 1 : The Attention Grabber

The Attention Grabber is the starting point of every speech. It is the step where we get, grab, and hold the attention of the audience.

There are three types of attention grabbers.

The first one is A story. For this one you start off by telling a short story that connects to your speech and is also engaging.

The second one is An Interesting Fact. For this one you want to tell an intriguing fact that directly  relates to your topic.

And the third one is A Question/Answer time. For this one your goal is to ask a thought provoking question that your audience will have to actually respond to. This will get them engaged with you from the beginning.

So, for example, if our speech was about Oprah Winfrey and her success, the three Attention Grabbers would be set up like this. (Remember that this section only lasts for 1 minute)

• For the story “You can give a story about the success of Oprah Winfrey, one of the most successful women in the entire world. By giving the story behind her success, you will have the attention of your audience from the very beginning of your speech.”
• For the interesting fact, “You can give facts about the number of successful women there are in the world who are mothers.”
• And finally For the question and answer time, “You can think of 2 -3 questions to ask the audience about their definition of success and also who is the most successful woman they know.”

Next, Step 2 : The Introduction

The Introduction is the transition section that leads directly into the topic of your speech. This step is simple but very important.

There are three types of Introductions.

The first one is General Details. For this one you simply give basic information about the topic.

The second one is 3 Main Points. For this one you state the three main points of your speech.

And the third one is State your opinion. For this one you can give just your main point on the topic.

So, for example, if our speech was about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, the three Introductions would be set up like this. (Remember that this section only lasts for 1 minute)

• For the general details you could say, “Today I will talk to you about Bill Gates. Bill Gates is the cofounder of Microsoft, which is the largest PC software company in the world.  His work has totally changed technology.  So, I would like to tell you the three reasons why I like him…”
• For the three main points you could say, “Today I would like to discuss why Bill Gates is the most important man of the 21st Century. I have three main points for my opinion. First, he  is a genius. Second, without him many businesses would fail. And third, he is an innovator.”
• And finally For state your opinion you could say, “Recently, there has been a debate about who is the greatest computer innovator. The debate compares Steve Jobs to Bill Gates. Both contributed a lot to our society, but in my opinion Bill Gates is the greatest computer innovator. Let me explain why.”

Now let’s look at  Step 3 : The Body

The Body section is the place where most of your information will be located. It is basically the meat of your speech. Which means that this is the information that will be most important for your audience.

There are three different ways to write your body.

The first one is 3 Details. For this one you choose three details about the topic and explain each of them in more detail.

The second one is 3 Reasons. For this one you give 3 reasons for your opinion and explain them in detail.

And the third one is 3 Examples. For this one you give 3 examples that support your opinion or the topic in general.

So, for example, if our speech was about lions, the three different ways to write our body would be set up like this. (Remember that this section lasts for 3 minutes)

• For the three details style you could ”give three specific characteristics of lions and why those characteristics are amazing.”
• For the three reasons style you could “give three reasons why lions are considered the king of the jungle.”
• And finally For the three examples style you could “give three example stories of lions and how they behave in their natural environment.”

Finally, Step 4 : The Conclusion

The Conclusion is the very end of your speech and is quite important because it will be the last thing that your audience will remember.

There are three types of Conclusions.

The first one is Restate. For this one you simply state your points briefly one more time.

The second one is 3 Summarize. For this one you summarize your opinion one more time.

And the third one is Make a final point. For this one you make a final strong point to emphasize your opinion.

Remember that this section only lasts for 1 minute)

And there you have it. How to give a speech in English in 4 easy steps!

There are four ways that you can speak about sports in English. The first way is to talk about your favorite sport. The second way is to talk about your favorite team. The third way is to talk about your favorite athlete. And the fourth way is to talk about your favorite event.

Now let’s break each of them down into a simple formula.

Step #1

# 1 : Tell me about your favorite sport.

In order to talk about your favorite sport fluently in English, you need to use the following 4 step formula.

• Step one : Name
  • Give the name of the sport that you like. For example, basketball, soccer, or baseball.
• Step two : Reasons
  • Give three reasons why this is your favorite sport. You can be specific with your answer.
• Step three : Since when
  • Give information about when you started liking this specific sport.
• And Step four : Amazing event
  • Give an example of an amazing event that happened related to this sport.

Now you can TALK about your favorite sport like this:

“My favorite sport is basketball. I like it because it is a team sport, it is exciting to play and watch, and it also requires a lot of skill.  Basketball has been my favorite sport ever since my father bought me my first basketball when I was 10 years old. One of my most memorable basketball games happened when I was in high school. I won the game for my team by shooting a 3-pointer at the last second. It was great.”

Step #2

# 2 : Tell me about your favorite team.

In order to talk about your favorite sports team fluently in English, you need to use the following 4 step formula.

• Step one : Name/Country
  • Give the name of the sports team and also the country the team plays for.
• Step two : Reasons
  • Give three reasons why this is your favorite team. You can be specific with your answer.
• Step three : Best players
  • Give the names of the best players and something special about them.
• And Step four : Record/Ability
  • Give some details about the record of the team and their special abilities/qualities.

Now you can TALK about your favorite team like this:

“My favorite soccer team is Manchester United. It is a professional soccer team that is based in England. I like them because their athletes play hard and smart. Their coach is also really good. In the past, two of their best players were Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Last year they won about 18 games.”

Step #3

# 3 : Tell me about your favorite athlete.

In order to talk about your favorite athlete fluently in English, you need to use the following 4 step formula.

• Step one : Name
  • Give the name of your favorite athlete.
• Step two : Team
  • Give the name of the team your favorite athlete plays for.
• Step three : Position
  • Give information about the specific position the athlete plays on the field/court.
• And Step four : Reasons
  • Give three reasons for why you like the athlete.

Now you can TALK about your favorite athlete like this:

“My favorite athlete is Stephen Curry. He is a professional basketball player for the Golden State Warriors of the NBA. He is the point guard for their team. I like him because he is a passionate player and many people consider him to the be the best basketball player in the world.”

Step #4

# 4 : Tell me about your favorite game or event.

In order to talk about your favorite game or event fluently in English, you need to use the following 4 step formula.

• Step one : Date and location
  • Give the date and the location where the event or game took place.
• Step two : Teams
  • Give the name of the two teams who participated in the event.
• Step three : Score
  • Give information about the score at the end of the event.
• And Step four : Situation
  • Give some details about what happened during the event.

Now you can TALK about your favorite game or event like this:

“My favorite sporting event happened on August 15, 2014 in Pennsylvania at the Little League World Series. The two teams that played in the game were the Taney Dragons and Nashville. The Taney Dragons beat Nashville in a 4 – 0 victory. The amazing thing was that the pitcher was the first female to pitch 6 innings, strike out 8 batters, and to pitch a shutout in Little League postseason history. It was amazing.”

The Rodriguez Brothers Circus is in town! Every year, the circus arrives and stays for a week. Then they go to the next town.

There are not many animals in the circus. People told the circus that they didn't like seeing animals performing. There is an elephant called Jacob and two old lions, Hattie and Meg.

Most of the performers are human! There is Leopold, The Strongest Man In The World. His father also worked in the circus, but Leopold is stronger than him, he has bigger arms and bigger legs too! Leopold performs his act every night for the town's people who come to watch.

Another performer is Clara. She says she has the longest hair in the world. It's about 4 metres long! She also has a daughter who works in the circus. Her name is Sue-Ellen. Her hair is a lot shorter, but she wants to grow it as long as her mother's. Sue-Ellen helps look after the animals and she's also learning how to juggle.

The highlight of the circus are the three clowns, Pit, Pot and Pat. They all wear long red shoes, but Pat's shoes are the longest and sometimes, he falls over because they're so long! They perform for about twenty minutes and they are always the most popular act with the audience, especially the children. Many people think Pit, Pot and Pat are three brothers, but Pat is older than the other two - he's their father! He's the oldest clown in the country, but he has a lot of energy.

Tomorrow will be the longest day because the circus is leaving town and everything must be packed away into big trucks.
